In 1975 the artist Bas Jan Ader attempted to sail across the Atlantic in a 12.5 foot long sailboat named Ocean Wave as part of an art piece titled In Search of the Miraculous. The artist disappeared during the voyage. The Ocean Wave was found empty in 1976, floating off the coast of Ireland.
Ader's final piece was the guide for a performance within the 2010 software Sail Simulator 5. The video was recorded and set to a lowering Shepard tone, a sonic illusion in which the tone appears to falling despite getting no lower. The video and sound pieces were installed within a wooden raft, within which viewers were able to sit.
